Apple's much anticipated CarPlay feature, formerly known as iOS in
the Car, got its first public airing at the 2014 Geneva auto show. CarPlay is a means of mirroring an iPhone's apps and functions through a car's
dashboard. Although the CarPlay screens look the same from car to car,
the control paradigms can vary.
Apple CarPlay is software installed in the infotainment system of a car that allows a connected iPhone to take over the dashboard display, replacing it with a simplified version of Apple's iOS 8.
CarPlay allows the user to interact with the audio and audio-streaming
services, messages, maps and phone functions of their iPhone while
locking the driver out of more distracting apps and functions not
directly related to driving the car.
"CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for
driving scenarios. It also works with your car’s controls — knobs,
buttons, or touchscreen. And the apps you want to use in the car have
been reimagined, so you can use them while your eyes and hands stay
where they belong." as said on Apple's website.
